Prospective students are invited to take part in faculty-led workshops in drama, STEM, makers, visual art and more. Session selections are for the student workshops. The parent agenda will include the session Tech in the MS: Trails to Playgrounds to Earthquakes, followed by a parent panel.

 

Workshop Descriptions

Ceramics - From a Slab of Clay with Julia Cardone: In this workshop, students will explore the basics of building functional forms from a slab of clay. Students will learn how to construct a simple, textured bowl form that will be included in our annual service project: Empty Bowls. This project focuses on clay, community and the fight against hunger.

Digital Arts - Photoshop: Dream Landscapes with Catherine Huber: Join us as we use our imaginations and the tools of Adobe Photoshop to build imaginary landscapes together. This workshop is open to any skill level.

Makers Challenge with Chris Cook: Get a taste of what we do in our Maker Space on a daily basis.  Combine some custom coded microcontrollers with craft supplies to create a unique electronic toy or game.

Studio Arts - Observational Drawing Class with Nikki Brugnoli: This is a studio class experience for anyone who likes to draw and would like to take that to the next level. The class will focus on a way of seeing and observing that can develop excellent drawing skills.

Theater Arts - An Acting Sample with Kate Davis: A master class in acting. Students will begin with a warm up and improvisation session and continue on to demonstrate and practice actor preparation techniques through scene study and games. Please wear loose and comfortable clothing.

Visual Arts - Artistic Design Through Printmaking with Louisa Neill: After designing a pattern to represent one's personality, students will create a relief printing matrix. We will then use a brayer to apply ink and expand upon the one's pattern through repetition and rotation of the original design.

Tech in the MS: Trials to Playgrounds to Earthquakes with Katie Knicely: The meaningful use of technology is a cornerstone of Flint Hill's concentration on student-centered learning. In this workshop, a middle school teacher will share how the successful integration of technology has contributed to the development of our robust and engaging middle school curriculums. From 3-D printed playgrounds to becoming Constitutional Law attorneys to developing "earthquake proof" structures, technology helps learning come alive!
